NEWTON, NC— Newton is proud to have been a partner in the historic announcement of Microsoft’s planned $1 billion investment in the phased development of four datacenters in Catawba County over the next 10 years.

One of the planned datacenters will be developed on a 160-acre site at the Newton Corporate Center off N.C. 10, just west of Newton. Under the terms of an annexation agreement publicly adopted by Newton and Hickory in July 2022, Hickory agreed to pay Newton a total of $15 million over the next 20 years.

With the $15 million, Newton will create an economic development fund that will allow the city to make strategic investments—debt free--to encourage growth and support future projects.

Newton thanks the leaders of Catawba County, the Cities of Conover and Hickory, the Town of Maiden, and the Catawba County Economic Development Corporation (EDC) for their partnership. Newton looks forward to continuing to work together toward a bright future.

There are many homes within miles of the new data center in rural Newton that still don't have real internet. I have watched these new cables for high speed internet cross my property, yet I still don't have access to the data speeds they carry. When will Newton do something about this?
